The Role of Gas Exchange Variables in Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing for Risk Stratification and Management of Heart Failure with Reduced Ejection Fraction

Published: 25 April 2018

A scientific review was made in the American Heart Journal examining 5 major gas exchange variables from CPET in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) patients.

The purpose of this review is to examine the role of cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) and its most commonly used ventilatory gas exchange variables for the purpose of risk stratification and management of HFrEF.

The review study highlights that "Peak V̇O2 and percent predicted peak V̇O2, the VE-VCO2 slope and EOV should be included in routine clinical testing, while OUES and PETCO2 should be considered as additional variables".
