Indirect calorimetry as point of care testing
A new key paper on Clinical Nutrition focused on the decisive role of Indirect calorimetry (IC) in clinical settings.
IC has been long recognized as the gold standard for assessing basal or resting energy expenditure (REE) and determining energy requirement is a fundamental of nutrition support, particularly in the situation where adjustment of energy provision is critical.
REE measurement does not only provide a way to assess a patient's nutritional requirements, but also to provide clear solutions allowing the physician to adjust the caloric prescription to avoid under- and overfeeding in acute settings as well as to control the direction of long term nutritional management in chronic diseases. Also, studying the changes in energy expenditure over time in certain diseases has captured and revealed many subclinical metabolic alterations during disease progression or improvement.
This study strongly affirms that bringing IC into clinical practice as point of care testing should be encouraged as a part of the individualized practice of modern medicine.
