Indirect calorimetry in obese female subjects: Factors influencing the resting metabolic rate.

A new study has been published to evaluate selected factors influencing resting energy expenditure (REE) in obese female subjects.
The study, published on the June issue of the World Journal of Experimental Medicine, was carried out by the Department of Experimental Medicine, Medical Physiopathology, Food Science and Endocrinology Section, Food Science and Human Nutrition Research Unit, Sapienza University of Rome (Italy.
RMR was defined for each subject using a COSMED Quark RMR indirect calorimeter equipped with a canopy. Measurements were performed along a 15-min period preceded by a 10-min rest.
The conclusion of the article is that "The precise identification of factors influencing the RMR is not only an experimental concern, but it represents a real clinical challenge. IC is an important method allowing an individualized obese patient care. Defining factors interfering with RMR will be useful to maximize the beneficial effects deriving from a tailored therapeutic approach.".
