VO2Max testing with COSMED K5 at Real Madrid C.F. training ground facilities
During Real Madrid's fourth day of pre-season, Carlo Ancelotti's players completed demanding high-intensity physical training wearing COSMED K5 metabolic system.
The assessment was conducted by O2Up, a team of experts in Professional Training and Functional Evaluation.
To determine players cardiovascular fitness and performance capacity (VO2Max), the test intensity was progressively increased while measuring ventilation and oxygen and carbon dioxide concentration of the inhaled and exhaled air.
VO2Max is considered the best indicator of a player's cardiovascular fitness and aerobic endurance and refers to the maximum amount of oxygen that an individual consumes during intense or maximal exercise.
It is based on the premise that the more oxygen an athlete consumes during high-level exercise, the more the body will generate adenosine triphosphate (ATP) energy in cells.
VO2Max is reached when the oxygen consumption remains at a steady state despite an increase in the workload. It is at this plateau that the athlete moves from aerobic metabolism to anaerobic metabolism.
