Guidelines for the Provision and Assessment of Nutrition Support Therapy in the Adult Critically Ill Patient

The updated Guidelines by Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) and American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (A.S.P.E.N.) were published in beginning of 2016 on the Journal of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition.

This particular report is an update and expansion of guidelines published by A.S.P.E.N. and SCCM in 2009. The intended use of these guidelines is for all healthcare providers involved in nutrition therapy of the critically ill—primarily, physicians, nurses, dietitians, and pharmacists.

The study presents a list of recommendation for clinical practice, based on both the best available evidence and the risks and benefits to patients.

The recommendation regarding "What is the best method for determining energy needs in the critically ill adult patient?" The consensus answer is "We suggest that indirect calorimetry (IC) be used to determine energy requirements, when available and in the absence of variables that affect the accuracy of measurement."
