COSMED PEA POD at Western Kentucky University for maternal and infant health research
The COSMED PEA POD is being used to measure the body composition of infants, potentially leading to longer and healthier lives at Western Kentucky University. Amy Bingham reports on WKU’s collaboration with the Medical Center in "View from the Hill".
The PEA POD is an Air Displacement Plethysmography (ADP) system using whole body densitometry to determine body composition (fat and fat-free mass) in infants weighing between 1 and 8 kg.
Dr. Rachel Tinius, Ph.D., EP-C-Associate Professor - Exercise Science, is utilizing the PEA POD for her research on how a mother's health, metabolism, and physical activity during pregnancy may influence the body composition of their babies.
Caitlin Burklow, Director of Women and Newborn Services at the Medical Center, expressed excitement about the PEA POD being available for research, which she believes will improve outcomes for mothers and babies.
