How metabolic testing with Q-NRG helps personalize eating disorder treatment
Reporter Cat Viglienzoni of WCAX recently visited The Kahm Clinic in Burlington (USA) to learn how clinicians navigate the complexities of eating disorder treatment and help patients stay on the path to recovery.
The Registered Dietitian Elaina Efird emphasizes the importance of understanding each patient’s baseline through metabolic testing using the COSMED Q-NRG.
This advanced tool measures how many calories a person burns throughout the day—including at rest—and what type of fuel the body is using. This data is key to identifying signs of undernourishment, especially when the body begins relying too heavily on lean mass, such as muscle and organ tissue, for energy.
The non-invasive, 20-minute test simply requires the patient to breathe in and out while the device analyzes oxygen intake and carbon dioxide output. Former patient Amelia Cassidy credits metabolic testing as a pivotal part of her recovery, providing objective numbers that helped her build trust in the process.
“I could see the numbers clearly in front of me,” she shared. Efird notes that many patients struggle to recognize the seriousness of their condition, particularly if they’ve been praised for losing weight. “Metabolic testing really helps with patient buy-in,” she explains. “People often come in saying, ‘I don’t think it’s that bad.’ Then we show them the results, and they realize—maybe they do need help.”
