VO2Max test with COSMED K5 at Hacettepe University (Ankara) · Faculty of Sport Sciences

Published: 22 September 2021

At Hacettepe University (Ankara), Faculty of Sport Sciences, Erkan Tortu measured the maximum oxygen consumption (VO2Max) with COSMED K5 to evaluate a young athlete's performances.

VO2Max is considered to be the best criterion of cardiorespiratory endurance capacity of the athlete. Since the used O2 is used for the production of ATP by breaking down the nutrients taken into the body, the more O2 it uses in a certain time, the more ATP it can produce.

This means being able to do more work or continue exercising for longer periods of time without fatigue. The higher the amount of O2 that a person can use in a unit of time, the higher the aerobic capacity of that person.

Increasing the VO2Max capacity will result in a delay in fatigue during competition and also a shorter recovery time. As the oxygen uptake capacity increases, the distribution of the heart in each beat increases, as more oxygen reaches the muscles, it increases their physical working capacity.
